Welcome to Modlocks

The Modlocks Method

The Modlocks method is primarily based on a felting or crochet technique paired with other dreadlocking techniques that are interchangeable to suit the needs of each client.

The Process: Felting hair into locs is not unlike the process in which wool or another suitable textile fibre (hair) is matted together by needling with a small hook and then by finger rolling or palm rolling to create firmness.

We believe in letting hair grow and loc naturally between appointments. Over tightening causes unnecessary tension on the scalp. Modlocks maintenance is recommended less often than traditional palming, re-twisting or interlocking systems. 1 - 4 times per year is often enough to keep dreadlocks tidy and strong depending on personal preference.

Your Hair Your Choice

Dreads / dreds / dreadlocks / dreadlocs / dredlocks / dredlocs / twisted locks / locs, Natty (natural) / Dready / Natty Dread (Rastafari), zatavi / Jata (Hindu), congos / bongos / Dada (African), Hair rolls (Indigenous). So many names and meanings, so much history and culture. Modlocks comes from the words modified or modern dreadlocks.

Respectfully it is your personal choice to refer to your hair as you are most comfortable. For Natural Hair stylists and all professionals in the beauty space designate “locs” as the default word.
